Biographical Note

Joseph Mahan, Jr. (1921-1995) was born June 11, 1921 in Cassville, Georgia.  He attended Reinhardt College in Waleska, Georgia and the University of Georgia, where he took and A.B.J. in 1946 and an M.A. in 1950.  He received his PhD from the University of North Carolina in 1970.  He served with the U.S. army in Europe from 1942 to 1945.  Among the positions he held were teaching jobs (1952-1959) with the University of Georgia at the Continuing Education Division at Columbus, which preceded the establishment of Columbus Collegeas the same time she served as Curator and Director of Education and Research at the Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts (1959-1972, Executive Director of the historic village of Westville in Lumpkin, (1972-the 1980s) and as the preservation planner for the Lower Chattahoochee Area Planning and Development Commission.  He organized and was the moving force within ISAC (Institute for the Study of American Cultures) which seeks to document pre-Columbian contacts between the old and new worlds.

Scope and Content

The collection reflects his career activities and his research.  It includes correspondence, copies of articles or excerpts from longer secondary works, extracted notes from primary sources, tapes of interviews and Indian ceremonies, and student papers. It contains notes taken from colonial and early national period primary sources relating to the history of Eastern North American Indian tribes and early 19th century archeology; articles from periodicals and newspapers (1952-1977) relating to American pre-history, particularly discoveries of inscription, coins, and metal artifacts indicating pre-Columbian trans-Atlantic culture contacts; personal correspondence (1952-1956) relating to research into American Indian and Georgia history; and a card file which indexes and annotates information, dates, and bibliography in this collection.  The Yuchi Indians represent one of the largest subject areas within the collection with publications, notes, and correspondence relating to their history, culture, ethnology, phonology, and the visit to Columbus of Chief Joseph Brown, their Green Corn Ceremony (tape), and the Coweta Memorial Association which acquired land in Russell County, Alabama, for the Yuchis.  Other subject areas include general archaeological investigations in the region; the Bull Creek archaeological site in Columbus; the Kolomoki Indian mounds; Singer-Moye Mounds; Rood Mounds; the Hearn Tablet, a Sumerian tablet found in LaGrange; the Treaty of Indian Springs Folder, February 12, 1825; the Haiman Civil War Sword Factory in Columbus; the Gunboat Chattahoochee crew members; The Gallant City, the Civil War Centennial pageant; King's Gap in Harris County; Walker-Peters-Langdon House; Major Raphael J. Moses; extensive primary and secondary material on Brigadier General Paul J. Semmes, a Columbusite killed at Gettysburg; symposium papers from the 1973 & 1974 conferences on pre-Columbian contacts held at Westville; and Westville correspondence and other records, 1968-1978.

The processed part of the collection is divided in 5 series: Series 1 -- Subject Files, Series 2 -- American Historic Preservation Commission, Series 3 -- Westville, Series 4 -- Institute for the Study of American Cultures (ISAC) and Series 5 -- Lower Chattahoochee Area Planning and Development Committee. In addition to the processed material, there are 17 boxes of unprocessed material, including several of publications and index cards, perhaps keyed to his subject files.

     This folder contains information on Barnsley Gardens, the remains of the 10,000 acre plantation of Godfrey Barnsley, a Savannah, Georgia cotton factor, which he acquired in the 1840s and named Woodlands.  The house was ruins by the 1970s, but the Rome Area Heritage Foundation applied for grants to purchase the remains of the house and the 35 acres of gardens for restoration and opening to the public.  Included here are correspondence, grant applications, reports and recommendation concerning the project.

     This folder contains correspondence between Mahan and Mary Crowder concerning the Catawba tribe. In addition, there is an envelope of material sent to Mahan by Miss Crowder that includes photographs of Indian schools, newspaper clippings on Indian crafts and the life and death of Samuel Taylor Blue, Chief of the tribe.

     This is a research paper by Vergil L. Seawell, Lt. Col., U.S. Army, for Dr. Mahan's History 454 class submitted on March 8, 1961 on Howell Cobb (b. 1815), the Confederate commander of the defenses of Columbus, Georgia in April of 1865.

     "Old Federal Road" – The Old Federal Road which intersected the Chattahoochee river at this natural fording site, was originally a lower Creek Indian Nation trading path.  With the advent of colonization, it became one of Western Georgia's earliest and most important emigrant and trading routes to the West.  General Lafayette crossed at this point in March 1825 enroute to Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
