League of Women Voters of Columbus Records (MC 31)

Historical Note

The League was founded in 1920 to help newly enfranchised women register and carry out their new responsibilities as voters.  The mission of the League of Women Voters is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government.  In 1973 the League expanded to include men as members and seeks to register all eligible voters.  These materials relate to the Columbus, Georgia chapter of organization.

Scope and Contents Note

Includes minutes, 1930-1958; reports of officers; membership cards; scrapbooks, 1930-1957; constitutions; by-laws; local, state, and national publications; questionnaires for candidates from various years; voting machines; county unit systems; public/private schools; TB hospital; poll workers and poll watchers material and publications relating to city government.  It also contains material about the history of the public library and the debate over moving it from downtown (the 1400 block of Broadway) to the former W. C. Bradley estate.  The League opposed the move because of its impact on the mill children.  The collection also includes some governmental publications.

Work cards 3 x 5, 1945- 1957
The ladies of the League for Women Voters visited most of the businessmen in town in pairs explaining the purpose of the league and requesting monetary donations.  These cards were kept on each visit with notes describing the receptivity of their visit, the amount donated, the date of the visit.  These cards are filed in alphabetical order.  There are interesting handwritten notes attached to many of these cards, i.e, "Old man says he's for T (Talmadge) and wouldn't give a dime"; "catch him if you can".
