James Floyd Avary Collection (MC 63)


Biographical Note

At the time of the donation of these materials, Floyd Avary was associated with Southex Enterprises, Inc. in Columbus, Georgia, as well as with the YMCA.

 

Scope and Content

An eclectic collection, it includes biographies of prominent men with early roots in Columbus: Samuel Spencer, president of the Southern Railway Company; Oscar S. Straus, founder of Macy's Department Store; and George “Kid” Woodruff, University of Georgia football coach.  It also contains football memorabilia (Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, and Georgia Tech) and material relating to Columbus Elks Lodge, 1927.

Folder 2 – Burr McIntosh Monthly, vol. 12, no. 46, January 1907, includes a photograph of Macy's founder Oscar S. Straus of Talbotton and Columbus, Georgia with biography. Also includes vol. 12, February 1907 with a photograph of Samuel Spencer of Columbus, Georgia with biography.

Folder 3 – History of the 56th Armored Engineer Battalion. This unit was made active at Camp Polk, LA on or about August 15, 1942. The history ends in June, 1945. It lists all the names and home address of the members of the battalion. 1940s
