Taylor Family Diplomas (SMC 160)


Biographical Note

Angie Lena Taylor (4 November, 1903-24 November, 1996) and her sister Alice Mae Taylor (b. 1905) were born and raised in Columbus, Georgia.  Both sisters graduated from Columbus High School and became teachers.  Their parents were Lena Land Taylor and Thomas Kimbrough Taylor.  The sisters had two brothers, Thomas K. Jr and Clay.  The family had lived on Hamilton Rd, Nances, and 5th Avenue.

Angie married Ennis Davis, a veterinarian in Columbus, and is buried in Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus.

By the 1940 census, Alice Mae lived with her widowed mother. Alice remained single and taught school in Columbus her whole life.

Scope and Content

This small collection is housed in the oversized drawer and consists of two of the sisters' diplomas.  Alice Mae's was granted by Columbus High School in 1921.  Angie Lena's was issued by the State Normal School for Teachers, University of Georgia, in 1924.

Provenance

The two diplomas were donated to the Columbus State University Archives on July 3, 2019 by Jean Davis McWaters, a niece of the sisters.
