Columbus Symphony Orchestra Collection (MC 301)

Organizational Note

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra was the second symphony orchestra established in the United States, coming into being in 1852. There was a long hiatus in its existence after the Civil War, and it was resurrected in 1949.

Scope and content

Columbus Symphony Orchestra scrapbooks were donated to the public library in memory of James Thomas Fletcher (1943-2010) who was a principal timpani player with the CSO for many years. The scrapbooks were disassembled by the Public Library to put in their vertical files. The first concert of the season was presented February 20, 1950 in the Jordan High School auditorium. The Women's Committee of the Columbus Symphony was formed in 1971.

This collection of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra consists of 2 boxes of materials relating to the orchestra; programs, newspaper clippings and write-ups from 1949 to 1999. All the folders and their contents were left intact as they were originally prepared and given to CSU Archives by the public library.

1949-1999                         2 boxes (2 l.f.)
